Saturday 8th July 2023 – Captain’s Day

With weather storm warnings in place, over 80 members took to the links for Alan Bolton’s Captain’s Day.
The course looked spectacular in the early morning sunshine but the storm clouds soon gathered, rolling in up the Estuary, and by mid-day the first few drops of rain were falling and just an hour later torrential rain battered the golfers.
Then, the sound that no golfer likes to hear – the Claxon, as the thunder and lightening rattled around the Bay and the golfers had to leave the course. Nothing was going to dampen the spirit of Captain’s Day, and the Clubhouse was soon packed, including the Marquee, which was definitely a bonus as the rain was relentless. After the storm delay, the competition was resumed.
In the evening, Alan welcomed members, guests and family to the Presentation before going on to thank ‘Team Dunnerholme’ for sharing the load and making his day ‘just perfect’, the commitment from members and volunteers had been, as always, truly amazing, and not even the weather could spoil his day.
When the Competition Results were announced, only four players had managed to score a 2 – Steve Knott, Dave Coverdale, Russ Bolton and Michael Garnett.
Nearest the Pin on 14th was won by Mark Barrett. The Longest Drive was won by Mark Sawrey, who had smashed a drive down the 16th fairway a distance most of us can only dream of! Best Gross was awarded to Brian Evans who carded a fantastic 73.
Ken Newsome scored nett 68 to take third prize, Gary Foxon scored nett 67 to take the runners up prize and with a nett 66 the winner of the Captain’s Prize 2023 was Chris Porter.
The evening entertainment was provided by the wonderful Claire-Charlotte accompanied on guitar by Jamie, while out on the Car Park the guests queued for delicious fish and chips provided by ‘The Old Smithy’ Barrow, mobile van.
