The First Barrow Rotary Ladies Open

Dunnerholme Golf Club was privileged to have been chosen as the venue for the Rotary Club of Barrow’s inaugural Ladies Open 4BBB Golf Competition. After a week of heavy rain, the greens staff had worked miracles to present the course in superb condition.

The event had taken months of planning by the Barrow Rotary Club team, and Lady Captain Gill Newsome and the Dunnerholme ladies section and it is hoped that the Open will now become an annual competition and be in every golfers calendar in future years.
The early starters got the best of the weather, with near perfect golfing conditions.

During the afternoon, the incoming tide brought with it, a tough swirling wind, making the golf difficult.

The winning pair came from the first four ball on the course. Sue Kirkby and Preeda Barrett from Barrow Golf Club, who scored a creditable 38 points, narrowly beating Marion McBride, Ulverston Golf Club and Rose Kelly, Barrow Golf Club with 37 points, after a card play off with home club duo Lynne Diggle and Angie Hill taking third place. Rotary President, Bill Joughin presented the prizes to the winners, assisted by the Lady Captain Gill Newsome.

Bottles of Champagne were awarded to two Nearest the Pin prizes with Pauline Murray, Ulverston Golf Club and Jackie Finch, Barrow Golf Club celebrating with ‘bubbles’.

It was announced that the event had raised over £600, benefiting local causes, making a wonderful end to a perfect days golf.
Thank you to all the golfers who played and supported this new event. Special thanks must go to our Main Sponsor, Bob Kett at Furness Plastics, for providing the support that the competition needed to make it such a great success.
